HCMC – The central province of Thua Thien-Hue is expecting to become a centrally-governed city by 2025, as outlined in a recent directive by the provincial Party Committee.

Local authorities have outlined key priorities, including effective development of new rural areas, poverty alleviation, and bolstering socioeconomic growth in remote areas of the province.

Relevant agencies are also focused on cultivating Hue as a hub of festivals, spotlighting its unique traditional and cultural values in Vietnam.

Between January and June, the province’s gross regional domestic product (GRDP) expanded by 6.51% over the same period in 2022, propelling it to the 25th position among 63 centrally-governed provinces and cities in the nation.

In this period, the tourism sector has taken center stage, witnessing a remarkable 27-fold increase in foreign tourist arrivals year-on-year. Total tourism revenue surged to VND3,600 billion, a 2.3-fold rise over the same period last year.

Thua Thien-Hue recently inaugurated Terminal T2 at Phu Bai International Airport. Concurrently, work on the implementation phase of crucial infrastructure projects, such as a coastal road and a bridge over Thuan An Estuary, are being sped up.

The disbursement of public investment capital in Thua Thien-Hue has surpassed 35% of the full-year target.

Vietnam now has five centrally-governed cities — Hanoi, Haiphong, Danang, HCMC and Can Tho.

A locality to be recognized as a centrally-governed municipality in Vietnam must have a population of at least 1.5 million and an area of at least 1,500 square kilometers, as well as a certain degree of socioeconomic development.
