Vietnam’s Party chief meets Chinese party official

HCMC – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong has extended a warm welcome to Liu Jianchao, who is currently visiting Vietnam as head of the International Liaison Commission of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party.

The Vietnamese leader met with Liu Jianchao in Hanoi this morning, September 5. Liu’s visit to Vietnam coincides with the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the Vietnam-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

General Secretary Trong expressed his appreciation of China’s support for Vietnam’s development as well as the contributions of senior Chinese leaders to the advancement of bilateral relations in recent years.

He also recommended that the commissions for external relations of the two Parties maintain close coordination and leverage the annual meeting mechanism between their respective leaders, as well as bring their traditional friendship to a new height.

The Chinese official expressed his agreement with the opinions of the Vietnamese Party leader regarding the enhancement of the cooperative relationship between both parties and countries.

Le Hoai Trung, head of the Party Central Committee’s Commission for External Relations, also held talks with Liu this morning.

During the talks, the two sides focused on assessing and reviewing the developments of Vietnam-China relations since Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong’s historic visit to China in October 2022.

They also talked about directions for cooperation between the two Parties and the two countries in the future.

China was the first country to establish diplomatic relations with Vietnam on January 18, 1950. Their relationship was upgraded into a comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in 2008.

China has been Vietnam’s largest trading partner for many consecutive years, while Vietnam is China’s largest partner within the ASEAN region. Two-way trade between the two countries amounted to US$175.6 billion in 2022, up by 5.47% compared to 2021.
