HCMC – Japan remains the top destination for Vietnamese guest workers, with over 34,500 individuals going to Japan in the first half of the year, according to the Department of Overseas Labor.

Data from the Ministry of Labor, Invalids and Social Welfare showed Vietnam sent nearly 72,300 workers abroad under labor contracts from January to June. This represents a 1.55-fold increase compared to the same period last year and accounts for 65.72% of the country’s full-year target.

Vietnam aims to send 110,000 individuals overseas for guest work this year.

Taiwan became the second largest destination for Vietnamese guest workers, employing over 34,500 people in the same period after Japan. Other markets such as Singapore, Hungary, and Romania also took on a considerable number of Vietnamese workers.

In the local labor market, a wave of layoffs is forecast to continue until the end of the year, as reported by a private economic development research board. Among the surveyed enterprises, about 5,200 out of 9,560 respondents said that they would reduce their workforce by over 5% by the end of the year.
