MPI proposes VND4 trillion for preventing Mekong Delta erosion

HCMC – The Ministry of Planning and Investment (MPI) has proposed to allocate an additional VND4 trillion from the 2023 state budget’s contingency fund to support 18 anti-erosion embankment projects in the Mekong Delta region.

The proposal has been submitted to the Prime Minister’s office for consideration, said the ministry during a recent working session on fund allocation for projects aimed at preventing erosion along riverbanks and coastal areas in the Mekong Delta. The session was held on August 28.

Deputy Prime Minister Le Minh Khai said that localities, ministries, and sectors should collectively evaluate and present a list of erosion control projects across the 13 provinces and cities in the Mekong Delta region. The emphasis is on addressing pressing issues and minimizing the impact of natural disasters.

It is essential to prioritize tapping local budgets for erosion control projects focusing on riverbanks and coastal areas. Central budget funds will be on standby to provide supplementary support as required.

Experts have recommended a multifaceted approach to erosion mitigation. This includes engineering solutions for urban centers and densely populated areas, where swift protection is crucial but comes with significant costs.

Soft solutions like reforestation are considered ecologically beneficial, but their feasibility is limited to areas with minimal erosion. Another strategy involves relocation and early warning systems.
